Elantec EL5144C/5146C Rail-to-rail Video Amplifiers

Chipcenter's Paul McGoldrick says . . .

Elantec Semiconductor, Inc. a leader in high-performance analog ICs, introduced a new family of rail-to-rail high-speed amplifiers.

The EL5144C and EL5146C are designed to operate in systems running on a single 5V supply. With rail-to-rail outputs and high drive capability, these ICs are ideally suited to low-cost video applications, as well as other analog processing functions. The EL5144C is available in a small SOT23-5 package.  The EL5146C is available in both 8-pin DIP and 8-pin SO packages, and also includes a disable function.  This disable reduces supply current to 2.6 microamps and sets the outputs to a high impedance state.

"These new amplifiers offer the perfect solution for high performance, consumer video applications," said Michael Jennings, product line manager for video products.  "With the introduction of HDTV and DTV applications, the requirement for high performance analog solutions is stronger than ever.  Elantec will continue to focus on this market.".  Elantec is planning future releases of dual and quad versions of the amplifiers which will also be available in small footprint packages.  Data sheets, samples, and production quantities are available now.

A number of analog manufacturers seem to forget how lucrative it can be to satisfy the special needs of engineers working in areas such as video; one has to think, sometimes, that our whole industry is focused around the massive volume markets where everything is cut-throat and a mistake can be a major problem -- even for the largest of vendors. The drive level from these parts is good, the use of a 5-V rail gives enough headroom for video applications, and the 100-MHz bandwidth is more than suitable. The use for standalone video amplifiers has dramatically increased over the last few years and every video-oriented consumer product, or even audio product with video switching, is using a bunch.

I also like the fact that the claims for differential phase and gain (at 0.1 degree/0.1 %, respectively) are not inordinately high, unlike the claims of performance that cannot be measured that I have seen from others. Both the EL5144C and the EL5146C are in production with the SOT-23 EL5144C priced at $0.93 in 10 k-piece lots. The EL5146C (with the disable/high-impedance latch feature) is in either an SO-8 or DIP-8 and is priced at $1.02 in 10 k-piece lots
