Intersil Offers Superior Performance Low Voltage Analog Switches

Industry's lowest ON resistance and fastest switching times for devices with a maximum 15-V supply.

The manufacturer says . . . Chipcenter's Paul O'Shea says . . .

Intersil, a provider of silicon technology for wireless access and communications analog markets, announced the expansion of their analog switch line with the addition of the ISL5120, ISL5121, ISL5122 and ISL5123 high-performance switches. The broad range of applications includes portable battery-powered equipment in which space and power consumption are concerns. Device design-in is aided by thorough documentation of part performance over the entire specified voltage and temperature ranges.

These high performance switches offer the industry's lowest on resistance (19 ohms) and fastest switching times (28/20 ns, Ton/Toff) for switches rated in the +15-V maximum range. Competing switches in this range typically have on resistances of 30 ohms and higher and switching times of 35/25 ns and higher.

The new +2.7 to +12-V (+15 V max) single-supply switches are available as dual single-pole single-throw (SPST) or single-pole double-throw (SPDT) configurations in the SOIC or smaller SOT-23 packages. They are offered in industry standard pin configurations.

High frequency applications also benefit from the new switches' wide bandwidth, and very high OFF isolation and cross-talk rejection. Signal response is flat even past 300 MHz, consistent over a wide V+ range, and stable for varying analog signal levels. At 1 MHz, off-isolation is greater than 70 dB in 50 ohm systems, decreasing approximately 20 dB per decade as frequency increases.

Intersil provides data sheets with enhanced device characterization data for these new switches, which includes complete specification tables at +3.3 V, +5 V and +12 V and specifications measured over the full temperature range. Engineers who need a full range of performance data for new product designs require this comprehensive documentation.

Intersil spent some time figuring out what analog engineers needed for their switching designs to help with their new portable designs. The new ISL512x switch family has a low operating supply voltage and low power consumption - just like you would expect. You might even expect low leakage currents, but this is really low at 100 pico amps, which can extend hold times in sample and hold circuits. If you have high frequency applications you will appreciate the high off-isolation as well as the crosstalk rejection. The I/O pins on the ISL512x devices contain ESD protection diodes instead of resistors because it provides over voltage protection and using a series resistor, defeats the purpose of using a low RON switch.

The device offers an impressive 28-nanosecond turn-on and 20-nanosecond turn-off time. It is available in 8-lead SOIC or the small SOT-23 package for space savings in portable devices.
ISL5120 - two normally-open SPST switches
ISL5121 - two normally-closed SPST switches
ISL5122 - two SPST switches, one normally-open and one normally-closed
ISL5123 - one SPDT switch (2:1 multiplexer)
ISL5122 and ISL5123 - guaranteed make-before-break operation to prevent conflicts

SOIC packages are available now. Prices vary from 54 cents to 60 cents per 100 piece lots according to package type and temperature grade. Packaging types include 8-lead SOIC, 6- or 8-lead SOT-23. SOIC also available in Tape and Reel; SOT-23 available only in Tape and Reel "-T"
