With advances in semiconductor technology driving die sizes and costs down, the technology for building highly integrated "systems on a chip" has emerged. Single chip ASIC solutions provide all the functionality of the current single board computer for a wide variety of applications in the embedded marketplace. As such, new tools and design methodologies are required for developing these products in order to take advantage of these advances in hardware.
