WHAT'S YOUR ENGINEERING QUOTIENT?

Problem 3—Where in the following galvanic series does copper fit?

Anodic
Magnesium
Zinc
Aluminum
Gold
Platinum
Cathodic

Answer: Copper is more anodic than gold, but more cathodic than Aluminum.

Anodic
Magnesium
Zinc
Aluminum
Copper
Gold
Platinum
Cathodic

Under some conditions, dissimilar metals may corrode do to galvanic action. The more anodic metal will suffer the corrosion.

That's why in civil engineering, fasteners are usually selected to be more anodic than structural members. Fasteners can be replaced as they corrode. Structural members must remain intact under all circumstances.

Other ways to handle galvanic corrosion is to provide a sacrificial anode (often made of zinc). This is a common technique used in the marine industry.

You can find a more complete galvanic series chart at www.engineerbob.com in the analog section.
