WHAT'S YOUR ENGINEERING QUOTIENT?

Test Your EQ•Homerun?

Problem 8Consider the circuit shown. Given that X is a square-wave with a period many times longer than one gate delay, what does Y look like?

Answer: The circuit generates a short positive-going pulse on Y when X has a falling edge. This type of circuit is often referred to as a glitch generator.

In physical implementations, the AND gate should be a Schmitt device to ensure a single clean transition on the output (Y). If the pulse needs to be lengthened, a resistor can be inserted between the output of the inverter and the capacitor.
