New ProductsPower Detection IC for RF Applications

The AD8361 TruPwr detector is a true root mean square-to-direct current (RMS-to-DC) converter that is capable of converting a complex modulated RF signal, from up to 2.5 GHz, into a DC voltage representing the RMS level of the signal. The device is highly linear and temperature stable. It is useful for detection and measurement of CDMA, W-CDMA, QAM, and other complex modulation schemes as well as RF power measurements. The AD8361 achieves instrument-grade performance and accuracy.

The AD8361 has three operating modes to accommodate a variety of A/D requirements, a ground reference mode, in which the origin is zero; an internal reference mode, offsetting the output 350 mV above ground; and a supply reference mode, offsetting the output to Vs 7.5. The dynamic range of the AD8361 is 30 dB and its measurement accuracy is 0.25 dB over a 14-dB range and 1 dB over a 23-dB range.

The chip is offered in a small 8-pin micro-SO package and requires only 4 mA from a 2.7 to 5.5-V power supply. Specified over the industrial temperature range of ę30ęC to +85ęC, the AD8361 is priced from $3.75 in 1000-piece quantities. An evaluation board is available.
