WHAT'S YOUR ENGINEERING QUOTIENT?

Test Your EQ•What's the Count?

Problem 5If the resolution of an encoder wheel is N stripes per revolution, what is the maximum encoding resolution when the wheel is encoded by a quadrature encoder?

Answer: 4N per revolution. This is because there are a total of four distinct edge combinations when the wheel is encoded by a quadrature encoder regardless of the direction of rotation.

Let the two channels be A and B, then the four distinct edge combinations (per 1/N revolution) are:

A rising edge, B level

A level, B rising edge

A falling edge, B level

A level, B falling edge
