PRIDE BEFORE THE FALL
Later that day, still basking in the
vain glow of my guru-like upgrade skills, I decided the occasion called
for a few commemorative printouts. Deftly clicking through my new
dually printer dialogs, I hit OK with fervor. As the file spooled,
I turned expectantly to the printer and waited for the printout. And
waited, and waitedý. I ended up having to give the three-finger salute
(Ctrl + Alt + Delete). It was only the first of many.
Let me say, Iým quite happy to fulfill
the misery-loves-company needs of my readers. If seeing me in a PC
wreck makes your day, Iým glad to oblige. My upgrade tale of woe may
have been deferred, but it wouldnýt be denied.
As you may surmise, I spent hours tinkering
with an astounding array of control panels, driver dialogs, BIOS settings,
and the likeýnot to mention trying different boards and cables. Much
of that time was spent pondering the mysteries of the universe during
interminable reboots. No matter what I tried, the best I could achieve
was a kind of regular intermittence. After a reboot, the setup would
work for a printout or two but eventually would either hang up waiting
for the chosen printer or, hereýs a good one, suddenly start printing
garbage on the other printer!
