Concord, Mass., April 2, 2001—API NetWorks Inc. today announced the industry's first HyperTransport technology-to-PCI bridge chip, the AP1011, a key piece of technology that will accelerate the use of HyperTransport technology-based processors. Co-developed by AMD and API NetWorks, HyperTransport is a new high-speed bus that reduces data bottlenecks and boosts the performance of current and future PCs and communications equipment. The AP1011 chip provides the crucial link that allows HyperTransport technology-based systems to use PCI (Peripheral Component Interface) devices that are currently on the market and under development.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), Tuesday, announced HyperTransport technology, which is designed to let the chips inside of PCs, as well as in networking and communications devices, communicate with each other up to 24 times faster than existing technology allows.

TAIPEI, Taiwan—Advanced Micro Devices Inc. officially rolled out its HyperTransport high-speed bus technology at the Taiwan Platform Conference on Wednesday (Feb. 14) and said it has gathered more than 100 companies, including Sun Microsystems, Broadcom, Nvidia, and Cisco Systems, to help lay down the infrastructure for the bus' industry acceptance.

The chip, AP1011, enables the use of HyperTransport, a communication technology codeveloped by AMD and API NetWorks, formerly known as Alpha Processor.

HyperTransport speeds communication between the CPU and computer components such as network cards, but it faces competition from similar Intel technology.

Advanced Micro Devices aims to increase the performance of PCs and other computing devices with an internal connection that increases the both the speed and amount of data that get ferried between chips.

The new connection, dubbed HyperTransport, will be licensed royalty free to manufacturers and, so far, the concept is gaining interest. Cisco Systems, Sun Microsystems, Microsoft, and others are looking at it, according to AMD.

AMD has released details of its HyperTransport bus-replacement technology, which is intended to eliminate bottlenecks between the main components of computers. With a peak data transfer rate of 6.4 Gbps, it is expected to appear first in high-end workstations and servers.
