Problem 3What is nanotechnology?

Answer:

Nanotechnology is a field of science whose goal is to create electronic and mechanical devices that are thousands of times smaller than current technologies permit.

Using lithography, the current process for manufacturing chips, circuits smaller than one micron (1,000 nanometers) can be produced. It is believed that lithography is quickly approaching its physical limits. To continue reducing the size of semiconductors, new technologies that work with individual atoms will be necessary. This is where nanotechnology comes into the picture.
