WHAT'S YOUR ENGINEERING QUOTIENT?

Test Your EQ

Problem 7One end of a microstrip line (effective permittivity at 1GHz = 4) is left open, the other is terminated in matched load. What would be the impedance measured 37.5mm from the open end at 1GHz?

Answer: The wavelength in this system is

l = c
f × sqrt(eg)
= 150 mm

This means that 37.5 mm is a quarter of a wavelength. A l/4 section of a transmission line inverts the load impedance, so at 37.5 mm, the open circuit at the end of the line will be perceived as a short circuit.
