The multitude of embedded controllers,
indicators, and communications equipment found on aircraft need to
communicate with each other to collect data, pass commands, and report
status. An airplane is one big computer network, and just like its
earthbound siblings, the airborne networks need throughput and reliability.
The throughput, however, will always come second to the need for reliability.
In this article, I want to introduce you to some powerful but obscure
protocols, the ones you find on aircraft interfacing flight controllers
and navigation equipment.
