INTRODUCING THE PACKET WHACKER

Applications Part 2: Setting a Course with Code

In this segment, Iıll focus on filling up PIC flash memory with code that allows the Packet Whacker and PICDEM.net combination in Photo 1 to speak Internet. The RTL8019AS is nice to work with, but there are some minor firmware zigs and zags I worked through to get the Packet Whacker to play nice with the PIC and supporting hardware on the PICDEM.net.

Photo 1ıThis PICDEM.net/Packet Whacker combination is about to have an Internet Protocol experience.

My intent is to leave you with enough information to apply my code to your code and achieve success with your PICDEM.net or Packet Whacker implementation. The best way I know to do that is to introduce you to my PICDEM.net/Packet Whacker firmware chunk by chunk. The bonus is that, if you are already a PICDEM.net owner and donıt desire to incorporate a Packet Whacker on your PICDEM.net demo board (in other words, you didnıt tear up your PICDEM.net like I did), you can also profit from my code. All you need is a steady hand, a fine soldering tip, and the grit to lift pins on the PICDEM.netıs native RTL8019AS. At this point, Iıll assume youıve done one or the other as far as hardware is concerned and move on into describing the PICDEM.net/Packet Whacker code.
