THE ETHERNET DEVELOPMENT BOARD

Lessons from the Trenches Part 1: Putting it all Together

WINDING DOWN

Now you should have everything installed except the RJ-45 female connector (J1), the DB-25 female connector (X1), the power barrel connector, and the PLCC socket for the PIC16F877. This is where the proper soldering equipment really shines. You can align the PLCC socket over the pads and tack down a couple of sides using a fine pitch soldering tip. Youýll need just a little bit of solder for the PLCC socket pins.

I suggest soldering from top to bottom along each side of the PLCC socket and then rotating the printed circuit board 90ý and repeating the top down solder technique. As you can see in Photo 11, thereýs just enough room for a solder tip and a line of solder all around the edges of the PLCC socket.

Photo 11ýThis isnýt as bad as it looks. Thereýs plenty of room with the right solder tip.
