M-Systems has announced that Taiwan-based computer giant Acer Inc. is using DiskOnChip as the local storage device in its new networking and Information Appliance product lines.

DiskOnChip is being used in Acer's iStation, a Web terminal being manufactured for various OEM customers. Acer has also designed M-Systems' DiskOnChip Millennium single-chip, monolithic flash disk into its new Web Phone IP100 that is slated for mass production this quarter. Manufactured for U.S. West, a major American telecommunications concern, and also the Australian telephone company, the IP100 with the DiskOnChip Millennium allows e-mailing and Internet access and provides the features of a conventional phone with voice mail. Acer's IP100 also supports two phone lines, enabling the user to make calls and access the Internet simultaneously.

The DiskOnChip product family is available in 32-pin DIP, 144-pin DIMM or TSOP packages, with capacities ranging from 8 to 288 MB. More than 500 standard embedded systems motherboards are shipping with DiskOnChip devices or built-in DiskOnChip sockets, according to the company. TrueFFS technology works in nearly all major operating system environments, including Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows CE, Windows NT, Windows NT Embedded, and Linux.

"Using DiskOnChip gives us a faster time-to-market," said Allen Jong, assistant director of Information Appliance business center, Acer. "Our engineers can find support for DiskOnChip products in every operating system with which they work. This allows them to easily integrate the flash disk into their designs and concentrate on the additional features that our customers want."

M-Systems' one-millionth DiskOnChip Millennium flash disk was sold to Acer as part of the shipment for use in the new Web Phone IP100.
