Techniques for generating a sine wave

by Eric Hagemann

Do you need a sine wave in your application but aren't sure about the best way to generate it? When working on embedded processors such as DSPs where an algorithm's efficiency can make or break an application, what are the choices for waveform generation? Let's take a brief look at these questions and investigate some alternatives.

Before venturing on this journey it helps to have an idea of where it will end. You're looking for a generator that produces samples of a sine wave. The generator should be able to run indefinitely (or at least until the batteries wear out); allow control of the waveform's frequency, phase and amplitude in a continuous fashion; provide an accurate representation of the sinusoid waveform; and be efficient in implementation.
