Answer to 'Blindfolded Othello Anyone?'

The Art of Flanking

Ahh, the art of protecting your flank while trying to out-maneuver the other guy . . .hey wait a minute, this is not Othello, this is politics at the office. I hope that bit of reflection didn't ruin for you what I consider to be a good game. In fact after I posted this TYN, I downloaded Othello for my PDA and promptly played until I conquered all the levels. What does that have in common with the answer to the TYN? Well, nothing, other than they both use Othello pieces.

I keep note pads (nowadays it is a PDA) everywhere I go because I never know when inspiration is going hit me. The solution to this puzzle was just one of those flashes of insight. It came on a 4-hour drive home from Idaho when everyone else in the van got to sleep but me.

I realized that the teaser didn't require you to keep even amounts of black sides showing. Once my noodle had a chance to digest this, the answer wasn't too far away.

All you have to do is create a separate pile (from all the rest) by selecting 13 pieces and flipping them over as you put them in the new pile. The number of whites in each pile will then be the same.
