Gerry Dorman
My name is Gerry Dorman and I am happy to be your guide in this section of
Chipcenter's EE Expert website service, "Linux and MIDI." At first glance, one
might wonder how these two seemingly disparate subjects are put together under
one roof. However, reflection will show that they have a lot in common and my
personal experience is that most people seriously interested in MIDI have an
interest in computing which transcends Microsoftýs operating systems.
My general background:
Graduate of Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute (now PNY), member of IEEE, "ham"
extra-class radio operator (k2gd, ex k2cqq) and life member ARRL, computer programmer
and hardware expert, webmaster, digital/RF/microwave consultant currently working
in Long Island, New York area. One of the original beta-testers for both Windows
95 and the Microsoft Network. My musical interests include jazz, classics, opera,
piano and keyboards. Monk through Chopin.
I have designed both analog and digital circuits, including audio/video routers,
ATM controllers, 'ham' transmitters and receivers. I hold several patents in
antenna measuring devices and high-frequency magnetic devices.
I have been heavily involved in computing since the early '80s ý starting with
IBM desktops and then HP Unix workstations. I was also involved in very early
computing ý when the program was punched onto cards and then loaded into a computer
without a monitor screen... that, however, that is another issue.
I program regularly in VC++, VB++, Java, JavaScript, VBScript, HTML and Perl,
in addition to using other more obscure languages such as AWK and SED.
I have a strong interest in mathematics and physics, including the recent Superstring
theory. I am currently involved with a local company on Long Island in the design
and fabrication of antennas and RF systems ranging from several megahertz through
the microwave range.
I also develop and maintain websites for various clients and myself. At present
I am responsible for 7 websites.
I would also call myself a home-grown philosopher. In general, I believe that
there is no such thing as too much knowledge or too much work. However, if one's
work does not result in increasing happiness, then one is doing the wrong thing.
Life is fun, not a task to complete. Just my opinion, however.
