Actel Technologies FPGA FPGA and CPLD
CPLD

Field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) offer many benefits when custom logic is required. FPGAs' on-site programmability allows you to move from concept to a working part in a very short time. There are no expensive nonrecurring engineering charges, and FPGAs allow you to make design changes at any time, even after you've released your product to market. FPGAs are only half the picture, though; the development system you use to design them is the other half. The Designer Series Development System meets all of these requirements. Its graphical Design Flow Manager clearly depicts and guides you through the Actel FPGA design process. You don't have to be an expert to begin designing Actel FPGAs with Designer Series. Design Flow Manager queries you to supply any missing information needed to proceed from one step to the next. It also blends seamlessly into your design environment, and it works closely with EDA software from companies such as Aldec, Cadence, Data I/O, Intergraph, Mentor Graphics, MINC, Synopsys, Synplicity, and Viewlogic. Design Flow Manager supports both schematic and high-level design methodologies, or a combination of the two.

Fully Automatic Implementation using Dyna ToolTM

DynaChip brings to market FFPGA devices at unprecedented performance levels. In order to achieve these speeds, DynaChip has focused its resources on routing structures and programmable interconnect technology. DynaChip developed the industry's first active programmable interconnect element, called an Active RepeaterTM. DynaChip's Active Repeater enables superior performance for programmable logic devices. Dyna ToolTM is DynaChip's user friendly FPGA design software. DynaTool is an open system with interfaces to industry standard VHDL and Verilog based designs.DynaTool accepts a VHDL or Verilog netlist as input which is then mapped, placed and routed on the selected DynaChip device. When place and route is completed, DynaTool returns back annotated netlists in either VHDL, Verilog or delay (SDF) information in industry standard formats. As an open system, DynaTool allows designers the efficiency of using industry standard EDA tools for schematic or HDL design. DynaTool is available on SUN or PC Win95 or NT platforms.

Lattice ispGDS (Generic Digital Switch) Switches

Lattice, the pioneer of non-volatile in-system programmable, ISP(tm) devices, has expanded the ISP product families to include programmable system interconnect. The ispGDS(tm) (Generic Digital Switch) family combines the in-system programmability, high performance and low power of Lattice's E2CMOS(r) programmable logic technology with a switch matrix architecture, resulting in an innovative programmable signal router. The ispGDS is a configurable switch matrix which provides the ability to quickly implement and change p.c. board connections without changing mechanical switches or other system hardware. The ispGDS devices provide for the connections to be reprogrammed without removal from the p. c. board via a simple 5V, 4 wire serial interface. This capability allows the system designer to define hardware which can be reconfigured in-system to meet a variety of applications. The ispGDS also conserves board real estate, providing up to 22 I/Os in about a quarter square inch of board space.

Pico Systems Inc. Quick-turn multicip modules using programmable interconnect technology Quick-turn multichip modules Click here

Pico Systems is a high-tech electronics company headquartered in Toledo, Ohio. The company focuses its efforts on production of custom multichip modules for applications in which quick turn-around is very important. Pico leverages antifuse technology to provide significantly shorter design cycles to users of multichip modules (MCMs). Pico pre-fabricates its MCM substrates with a variety of generic routing resources, allowing for rapid development of modules after receipt of an order. Each substrate contains full, integral power and ground planes, providing built-in decoupling capacitance. With no custom fabrication cycle, Pico delivers first modules two to three weeks after receipt of the netlist and circuit components. This cycle time represents a reduction of as much as an order of magnitude over conventional, custom-mask approaches or "hard-wired" approaches.

Philips Semiconductors is entering the CPLD market in a big way. Their CoolRunner CPLDs reflect innovative approaches in circuit design. The PXA architecture introduces, for the first time in CPLD products, the advantages of merged PAL/PLA logic blocks. These product designs migrate gracefully towards lower voltage power supplies and higher densities. Philips Semiconductors CPLD products are being developed on the most advanced process technologies. Samples from the first CPLD silicon found their way onto beta customers' boards, fully working. The CPLD business Unit focus' on three market segments: the 3.3 volt high performance market where high speeds are necessary to improve overall system performance; the power sensitive application arena for laptops and other battery powered portable equipment; and the mainstream 3.3 and 5.0 volt market. This CPLD effort is fundamental to Philips Semiconductors' ability to expand development of embedded cores and systems-on-chips.
