Another Required Checkmark for Today's CPLDs

Even though large, complex look-up table based programmable logic devices (FPGAs) garner all the attention in the PLD world, the product-term based CPLDs are increasingly used in various applications to implement control, decode logic or glue logic. CPLDs are used where blazing fast logic functions have to be implemented and/or when the logic cannot be configured at power up (due to timing or other considerations). CPLDs are also relatively easy to design with. The software is for most part downloadable from the vendor web site and the design can be fit in a CPLD relatively quickly to meet the needed performance.
