Supertex, Inc. today announced the HV9606 PWM controller at the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) being held in Dallas, Texas, this week. The HV9606 allows designers to create highly efficient (>90%) power supplies for a wide variety of distributed board mounted power (BMP) applications, including 48V to 5V, 3.3V, 2.5V or less. The HV9606 utilizes fixed frequency current-mode control, supports both isolated and non-isolated topologies and provides all the necessary functions to implement a flyback, forward or synchronous forward converter. The HV9606 integrates on chip many common functions that typically require many external components. These functions include a 250V start up regulator, a soft-start, an output voltage monitor/POR function, a charge pump gate driver that ensures a fully enhanced gate drive, a +/-1% trimmed bandgap reference and a UVLO with programmable hysteresis. The HV9606 operates from 15kHz to 400kHz to allow the use of smaller magnetics with acceptable switching losses. "The small SSOP-20 footprint, coupled with the extensive list of functions that previously had to be provided using external discrete solutions, ensures that HV9606-based designs will be smaller, less expensive and the lowest component count solutions for OBP applications," said David C. Schie, Vice President of the Supertex Telecom/Broadband Group. "The use of switched resonant reset techniques coupled with the HV9606 further allows fully synchronous operation throughout the operating range. This rivals the efficiencies of competitive solutions that cross the isolation boundary, at a fraction of the cost and parts count." The HV9606 may be powered directly from low voltages such as 3.3V and 5V to generate supply voltages like -48V for telecom applications. The charge pump gate drive allows the HV9606 to enhance the gate of the external MOSFETs when being powered from such voltage levels. In telecom line feed applications such as ISDN or Pair Gain, the internal 2.9V circuitry and low quiescent current increases the number of units that can be connected to a loop. The 250V VIN capability coupled with maximum "pre-UVLO" current of <6uA ensures that the most rigorous regulatory specifications are met. An optional "soft-start" skip feature coupled to the output voltage monitor allows fast recovery from temporary line losses if the output has not decayed. This can reduce output capacitance requirements up to 40%. In VoIP applications the <6uA "pre-UVLO" current ensures that the HV9606 cannot interfere with the IEEE802.3af signature detect. The VX2 pin can be used to soft start a pass element, thus eliminating the need for an additional hotswap IC or switch to hold off the load during discovery. Supertex provides technical support, reference designs, gerbers, BOMs and design kits that can save customers up to $70 per power supply compared to typical brick prices in 10k quantities, while retaining similar features and efficiencies. Samples of the HV9606SP are available from stock in an SSOP-20 package. Lead-time for production quantities is 4 to 5 weeks ARO, priced at $1.74 each in 10K quantities.

Universal DC/DC controllers capable of supporting various isolated and non-isolated DC/DC converter topologies are being introduced by a number of manufacturers. The motivation is to simplify the power supply designer's job and standardize the controller design regardless of the application or type of converter used, making it less expensive and more cost effective. A new addition to this new family of universal controllers is the HV9606 PWM controller from Supertex, which is capable of supporting both isolated and non-isolated topologies such as flyback, forward, and synchronous forward converters. The fixed frequency HV9606 controller integrates many functions that typically require external circuitry, making it smaller and less expensive.
