Allegro MicroSystems, Inc. Announces a New DMOS Full-Bridge Motor Driver IC For Portable and Battery Operated Stepper Motor Applications

Allegro MicroSystems, Inc. announces the introduction of a new dual full-bridge PWM motor driver IC. The A3965 incorporates two DMOS H-bridges, capable of output currents to ý500 mA and motor supply operating voltages of 6 V to 20 V. The DMOS output transistors feature a low RDS(ON) rating for low power dissipation. The logic supply input of the A3965 will operate with an input voltage to as low as 2.85 V making the part an excellent choice for systems where logic supply is only available from a battery source. When not driving a motor, a SLEEP mode disables all circuitry and typically draws less than 1 ýA supply current from motor and logic supply. In an effort to maximize the appeal of the product for portable applications, a key design objective for the A3965 was to minimize power consumption during both the off state (SLEEP) and on-state during PWM operation. While in a PWM mode, the fixed frequency ON pulses of each H-bridge are 180 degrees out of phase to minimize the peak demand required of the motor supply. This achieves savings in the size and cost of external power supply components. Industry standard PHASE and ENABLE input terminals are provided for use in controlling the speed and direction of a stepper motor with externally applied PWM control signals. The A3965 is manufactured using Allegro's ABCD3 (Allegro Bipolar CMOS DMOS 3rd generation) process. The A3965 is supplied in a 24-lead plastic SOIC with a copper batwing tab (suffix 'LB'). The A3965 is targeted to meet the needs of the office automation and computer peripherals market, portable consumer, as well as the medical markets.

The new PWM motor drive controller IC from Allegro is targeted towards battery-operated motors where power consumption is at a premium. With less than 1ýA of supply current during sleep and off modes, the A3965 conserves critical battery power. Two DMOS H-bridges are incorporated to deliver up to 500mA of drive current and operate off an input voltage as low as 2.85V making it compatible with various single and two-cell battery sources.
