Analog Devices new ADP3205 multi-phase core controller and its previously introduced ADP3415 dual MOSFET driver form the first 3-phase controller/driver chip set that is fully compliant with the Intel Mobile Voltage Positioning (IMVP)-IV specifications. The IMVP specifications are designed to maximize the operating time of notebook computers by carefully minimizing the CPU's core voltage and frequency, thus scaling its performance to meet the demands of the system. Computer OEMs can now use the ADP3205 and ADP3415 to build a dedicated triple-phase core controller with balanced current sharing and superior transient response. A key feature of the ADP3205 is the pin-selectable 1-, 2- or 3-phase operation. Operating out of phase, the devices efficiently drive the power MOSFET switches of a non-isolated synchronous buck power converter topology with minimized ripple. The ADP3205 also includes adaptive noise blanking for high speed and easy board layout, as well as highly redundant over- and under-voltage protection. These features make the ADP3205 an attractive solution for mobile voltage regulator designers working with computer manufacturers to optimize the performance of their latest Intel CPUs code-named Banias. The ADP3205 is focused on the thin, light and ultra-portable notebook PCs for maximum operating time and highest performance. The ADP3205 is packaged in a 40-pin 6 mm x 6 mm chip scale package (CSP) specified for operation over the industrial temperature range of 0ºC to +100ºC. The ADP3205 is priced at $2.40 per unit in 10,000-piece quantities and samples are available now from stock.

Multiphase converters offer unique advantages compared to single-phase counterparts as they minimize the required input and output filter capacitors needed as well as the attainable output voltage ripple. This is why they are increasingly used in low voltage power conversion applications requiring very low ripple and minimal filtering. Analog devices' new multi-phase controller, the ADP3205, offers designers the flexibility to implement single, dual, or three phase operation via a selectable control pin. Various features are incorporated in the new controller making it ideal for mobile voltage regulators used in light and ultra portable computing applications.
