Intersil Launches Advanced PWM + Linear Combo Power Controller

Intersil Corporation, a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced the new Enduraý ISL6226 synchronous buck PWM plus linear low-dropout (LDO) combo controller. The ISL6226 controller reduces parts count and saves board space while offering the industry's lowest bill of materials. The wide operating voltage range of 5- to 24-V makes this advanced dual controller an ideal choice to power chip sets, memory, audio and graphics in a wide range of portable and fixed information appliances. Target applications include notebook PCs, web tablets, portable data terminals, point-of-sale terminals, portable instruments, LCD-PCs and blade servers. The ISL6226 provides a low-cost and flexible power solution with both an advanced PWM controller and a linear LDO regulator in a single 24-lead SSOP package. Component count and costs of the solution design are reduced because no current sense resistor is needed, no discrete Schottky diode is needed parallel to the lower MOSFET and there is only one 5-V power pin, which eliminates one bypass capacitor and a resistor. In addition, only a single resistor is needed for current-limit protection. The ISL6226 delivers excellent dynamic response, thermal shutdown protection, and high efficiency during light load operation. The ISL6226 is available now. Price per ISL6226CB-T, on tape and reel, is $2.20 in thousand unit quantities. Other quantity pricing is available upon request.

Combo linear and switching power controllers are gaining popularity in many applications that require dual outputs and would use a combination of switching supplies and linear regulators. Integrating the PWM controller will definitely save real estate while minimizing cost and BOM. The latest combo controller/regulator offering is Intersil's Edura ISL6226 synchronous buck PWM controller and linear low drop out regulator. Targeted towards notebook PCS, portable instruments, and other low voltage power needs, the ISL6226 features a lossless current sense technique that senses the MOSFET RDS(on) for higher precision. Various safety and protection features ensure reliable operation over its intended operating range.
