Fairchild Semiconductor International announces the new FAN7601, a programmable frequency, current mode PWM controller that meets the International Energy Agency's (IEA) "1-Watt Initiative" aimed at reducing the world's standby power losses to below 1 Watt. With an operating frequency of up to 300kHz and an operating current of 4mA max, the FAN7601 significantly minimizes switching losses and is therefore considered a "green" product for complying with international energy savings guidelines. The FAN7601 requires few external components and is an ideal low-cost solution for off-line switch-mode power supply (SMPS) and DC/DC conversion applications, as well as for adapters in notebook PC, LCD monitor, DVD, set top box and PC auxiliary power supply applications. Internal features of the FAN7601, such as a programmable soft start (20mS) and a start-up switch, further reduce power consumption. In addition, overvoltage protection (19Vinput/2.5Vfeedback), thermal shutdown, and under voltage lock out (UVLO) (12V / 8V) enhance system reliability. As a result of its simple board layout requirements, the FAN7601 ensures ease-of-use in applications, in addition to long-term reliability. The FAN7601 complements Fairchild's other power solutions for SMPS and DC/DC conversion applications such as optocouplers, QFETs™, MOSFETs, and bridge rectifiers. The FAN7601 is available in an 8-dip package.

The standby energy waste in electrical equipment has grown to become a visible phenomenon and a significant issue in numerous energy efficiency policies. Various organizations are developing programs and standards to reduce standby power consumption in new equipment. Manufacturers are actively developing technical solutions to reduce standby power consumption in their new generations of appliances to a level of below 1 Watt. The International Energy Agency (IAE) has adopted this initiative and is actively promoting it worldwide. Responding to this new challenge, Fairchild has introduced a new programmable current mode PWM controller that reduces the standby power consumption below 1 Watt. Using an switching frequency of 300kHz and operating current draw of 4mA, the FAN7601 controller significantly reduces the switching losses in SMPS applications to meet the IAE initiative. As more and more manufacturers offer more "Green" power devices, standby power consumption could soon become a thing of the past.
