Tyco Electronics Power Systems announces the EQW series of industry standard eighth brick DC-DC converters, creating up to 50% cost savings compared to using a quarter brick format. The modules offer optimum efficiency and power density, enabling electronic designers to save on costs and board space. They are targeted at a broad range of communications equipment OEMs and can be used in powering distributed power and intermediate bus architectures as well as the latest integrated circuits or microprocessors. EQW series modules provide up to 25A output current, using synchronous rectification technology and innovative packaging techniques to achieve ultra high efficiency of 90% at 3.3V full load. A wide variety of models are available, operating over a nominal 48V input (36Vdc-75Vdc) to create outputs of 1.2V/25A, 1.5V/25A, 1.8V/25A, 2.5V/20A, 3.3V/20A or 5.0V/13.3A. The modules are available in through-hole or surface mount (SMT) versions. SMT models use an innovative connector pin, enabling them to self-level on the customer board during the re-flow process of automated production. This automatically compensates for any co-planarity issues associated with warped boards and ensures that reliable connections are made during assembly. "We expect the price and size benefits of the EQW Series to help the eighth-brick format become a mainstream option for electronic designers," said Sabi Varma, Global Director of Marketing and Operations at Tyco Electronics Power Systems. "The range of models we are making available will enable our customers to make the switch from using a quarter brick format in a huge variety of applications." All EQW series modules offer a range of management features including remote On/Off, output voltage adjustment and remote sensing. Safety features include protection against output over voltage, over current or over temperature of the module. Output ripple and noise are minimized, removing the need for additional external filtering. A robust open-frame construction is able to withstand industry standard through-hole handling, soldering and cleaning processes and can operate in temperatures ranging from -40ºF (-40ºC) to 185ºF (85ºC). All EQW series modules are built around an industry standard eighth brick footprint of 2.28 in x 0.90, with a low profile of only 0.335 in (57.9 mm x 22.8 mm x 8.5 mm). The EQW010-020 modules are available now, priced at $49.10 in 1,000 unit quantities.

Eighth brick converters have many advantages compared to earlier generations of half-brick and quarter brick counterparts. They typically occupy less than 50% of the board space of a standard quarter-brick, cost less, and offer highly efficient power conversion stages. DC-DC converter brick manufacturers are offering more and more of their power converters in the new eighth brick format. Tyco's new EQW eighth brick DC-DC converter family is the latest entrant in the market. Providing up to 25A of load current and available in a wide range of output configurations, the new series offers more than 50% cost and real estate savings making it ideal for various distributed power applications.
