Five new LITTLE FOOT® Plus Driver products designed to simplify the use of n-channel MOSFETs in high-frequency buck regulators were announced today by Siliconix incorporated ,an 80.4%-owned subsidiary of Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. With efficiencies better or comparable to competing implementations in the MLF/QFN/Power Block packages, these new devices in the LITTLE FOOT® SO-16 feature a ý38% smaller, standard footprint, simplifying design, assembly, soldering, and layout. The n-channel Si4738CY (20 V), Si4770CY (20 V), Si4724CY (30 V), Si4732CY (30 V), and Si4768CY (30 V) synchronous MOSFETs with integrated driver circuitry are designed to extend battery life and/or enable more efficient use of power. Applications will include high-frequency, multi-phase dc-to-dc switchmode power supplies for CPU core, graphics control, chipset, and auxiliary power in systems including desktop computers, servers, workstations, notebook computers, and tablet PCs, and point of load (POL) applications for fixed telecom systems. With optimized on-resistance values and "shoot-thru" protection for low-side operation, and QGD optimized for high efficiency in high-side operation, the new devices provide high efficiency while enabling an integrated board layout with significant space savings over discrete solutions. By integrating two MOSFETs and a driver in a compact SO-16 package, the Vishay Siliconix devices released today offer reduced gate-drive losses and higher switching frequencies while simplifying board layout and allowing designers to implement less-complicated controller solutions. The Si4724CY also features an integrated Schottky diode, further reducing the number of components required on the printed circuit board. Each device features a switching frequency of up to 700 kHz+, driver impedance of 1 or 3 Ω, and operation down to 4.5 V, as well as break-before-make action and under-voltage lockout. Samples and production quantities of the new LITTLE FOOT® Plus Driver products are available now with lead times of 10 to 12 weeks for larger orders.

Integration is definitely the way of the future. This is probably a general statement that applies to almost any application. In our context, integrating power, control, and drive circuitry has many advantages including reduced size and foot print, reduced cost and increased noise immunity, not to mention reduced design cycles and rapid time to market. That is what prompted many power device and control IC manufacturers to offer a new generation of highly integrated power ICs. Siliconix's new family of LITTLE FOOT Plus Drivers is the recent addition to their family of power ICs targeted towards multiphase dc-dc SMPS power supplies in computer and telecom applications. By integrating high and low side power MOSFETs along with the driver circuitry, the new devices offer a compact package design requiring minimal real estate and board space.
