National Semiconductor Redefines Power-Management Solutions for High-Voltage Power-Conversion Applications

Redefining power management for communications systems, National Semiconductor Corporation launched two new switching regulators tailored for high-voltage power-supply designs for communications, industrial, and automotive applications. By combining advanced high-voltage processes, chip-scale packaging, and proprietary circuitry, National Semiconductor offers the industry's first fully integrated switching-regulator ICs that operate over a range from 10 V to more than 100 V.

"National's new high-voltage power products address the evolving and demanding power-conversion requirements of next-generation systems for our major customers," said Paul Greenland, marketing director for National Semiconductor's Power Management Group. "The LM5000 family provides engineers with all-in-one solutions for reliable, high-performance, and cost-effective power-system design. In light of the positive feedback we've already received from customers, we are confident the LM5000 family will become a preferred power solution for high-voltage systems."

According to the Darnell Group, a leading power-management market research firm, the global communications power market is expected to grow from $4.4 billion in 2003 to $5.8 billion in 2008, a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.5 percent. In units, the market is expected to experience a CAGR of 11.2 percent during the same period.

Currently, communications application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) deploy deep sub-micron technologies that require a sub 2 V power source at high current. At the same time, power demand is increasing along with the number of the ports per board and the speed of communication. National Semiconductor simplifies power conversion from the high-voltage bus to the low voltages required in communications and automotive equipment.

As an industry leader in power management, National Semiconductor's high-voltage power IC portfolio also includes the LM5041/LM5100 100 V cascaded controller-driver chip set with programming timing. National has developed power-management technology for a wide range of applications, including communication infrastructure, wireless handsets, and other portable devices, servers, and PCs.

National's LM5000 family is designed using the company's newest high-voltage (100 V) Analog Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS process (ABCD150-HV), which enables the integration of logic circuitry, regulation functions, precision analog circuits, drivers, and power switches on a single die. This family also makes good use of National's advanced packaging initiative to produce the world's smallest 100 V power devices in a thermally enhanced, surface-mount, leadless leadframe package (LLP).

The LM5000 fully integrated high-voltage switching regulator in an TSSOP-16 or LLP-14 package is priced at $2.00 each in 1000-unit quantities. The LM5030 high-voltage PWM controller in an MSOP-10 or LLP-10 package is priced at $1.85 each in 1000-unit quantities.

The LM5030 and LM5000 are available for sampling now, with volume production in June and July, respectively.

Today's power designers are increasingly looking for "all-in-one" power systems that are reliable, cost-effective, and faster to deploy. Power-semiconductor device and IC manufacturers are responding to these increasing demands by offering integrated switching-supply solutions that encompass higher levels of integration, have lower cost, and occupy minimal real estate.

The LM5000 and LM5030 power solutions from National Semiconductors, a pair of high-voltage switching regulators and controllers, are the latest market introductions targeted towards telecom, industrial, and automotive power systems. The LM5000 is a fully integrated current-mode PWM DC/DC regulator with a built-in 80 V power DMOS transistor. The LM5030 is a current-mode DC/DC PWM controller that can implement push-pull and bridge topologies.

Supported by Coilcrfat's magnetic solutions, designers are poised to deploy these chip sets pretty rapidly in their new designs.
