ASICS: Just Too Expensive?

In a recently published interview Jerald Fishman, president and CEO of Analog Devices Inc. characterized the ASIC era as “rapidly approaching the end of its life.” He said it wasn’t on account of technical shortcomings, noting that Moore’s Law still holds true. Rather, Fishman said, ASIC has reached the end in terms of economics. At 90 nanometers, he noted, it will cost $1 million for a mask set. As such ASICS have become, in Fishman’s view, “a very expensive and very risky thing to do.”. Further he cited an analyst’s conclusion that at 90 nanometers only 1 in 10 current ASICs are viable. Is the Analog Devices CEO correct? You'll find a comments box following the question.

In terms of economics, is 90nm the end of the line for traditional ASICS?
